Batu Maung, Penang Island
This well known fishing village is located on the south- eastern tip of the island. The fame of the place comes from the shrine located at the sea front which is dedicated to Admiral Cheng Ho, a famous Chinese official who came to Malaya in the 15th century, during the Ming Dynasty. His name is featured mainly during the history between China and the Malacca Sultanate. The admiral is supposed to have landed on the island to replenish his ship with supplies before venturing into the Indian Ocean. A giant footprint-like impression on a rock at the shrine is believed to be that made by Admiral Cheng Ho. He is worshipped as a deity, known locally as ‘Sam Poh Kong’.
The area also has restaurants serving fresh seafood at night.
