Cheah Kongsi House, Penang

Cheah Kongsi, Penang
Located at Lebuh Armenian, the Cheah Kongsi (Cheah Si Hock Haw Kong Kongsi) is the clan house for the Cheahs in Penang. It is smaller than the Khoo Kongsi but the architectural style of the building is truely impressive. The Cheah clan is one of the five major Hokkien-speaking clans of Penang.

The clan house is a stately double-storey porched building with a courtyard. The Chinese-style house, Art Nouveau wrought-iron gate and balustrades and a pair of British iron lions reflect a blend of eastern and colonial influences. Elements of Malay architecture are found in the motif of stone carvings. A hall for worshipping is located on the upper floor.
Visitors are allowed but permission must be obtained to enter.
Location: Lebuh Armenian, George Town.
